lingerie model Jessica Cambensy risks career to steal HK$600: Busty Hong Kong model Jessica Cambensy is out on bail after Hong Kong police charged her for theft on Monday, following a four hour-long visit to a police station in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Police alleged that Cambensy, the spokesmodel for a large lingerie company, had taken HK$600 (S$98) which a forgetful woman had left behind at an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) in Tsim Sha Tsui.

According to the police, the forgetful woman realised she had not taken the money she had withdrawn from the ATM and immediately returned to collect her cash, only to find the money gone.

She then called the police and investigators found that the woman’s HK$600 vanished after Cambensy used the same ATM to withdraw money some time later.

This incident happened on July 30 last year.

Police said that they only decided to charge Cambensy on Monday because it took them

some time to gather enough evidence of her alleged theft, as security cameras did not show her taking the money.

They added that it is considered theft if an individual holds on to another’s lost property and does not report it to the police.

Cambensy, who was on her way to Taiwan to shoot an action film, appeared calm when Hong Kong media caught up with her at the airport on Tuesday, but soon broke down.

The Court of Appeal has upheld a landmark ruling that gives priority to company pensioners - ahead of creditor banks and bondholders - when those companies become insolvent.

Today's decision is a victory for the Government's Pensions Regulator.

But critics warned the ruling could deter lenders to businesses and "impact on corporate Britain's ability to sustain any sort of recovery".

The appeal was brought by administrators acting for the estates of two bankrupt firms.

The bank Lehman Brothers has pension scheme liabilities of £125 million and the Canadian telecoms group Nortel Networks £2.1bn.

Appeal judges Lord Justice Laws, Lord Justice Lloyd and Lord Justice Rimer unanimously backed a ruling by Mr Justice Briggs in the High Court last December that UK law requires that the pensioners get paid before the banks who have lent the bankrupt company money.

Lord Justice Lloyd said that "despite the oddities, anomalies and inconveniences" of the High Court decision, it was right not least because the only alternative would be that the pension scheme liabilities would "go into a black hole".

The appeal judge said: "That cannot have been the intention of Parliament."

The case may now go to the Supreme Court for a final ruling.

Under section 75 of the Pensions Act 1995, a company sponsoring a defined benefits pension scheme can be obliged to make up any shortfall between the scheme's assets and its liabilities. ... READ MORE

We give millions of pounds to the EU, which has now absorbed the European human rights mechanism into itself, but there is nothing that this system can do about Stalinistic trials conducted by the current Ukranian government in order to get rid of its biggest rival.

Meanwhile convicted rapists in the UK are given more European human rights than homeless ex-Servicemen on the streets of our largest cities.

SYDNEY/TOKYO, Oct 14 (Reuters) - Apple Inc's new iPhone went on sale in stores across the globe on Friday, with fans snapping up the final gadget unveiled during Steve Jobs' lifetime, many buying the phone as a tribute to the former Apple boss.

Hundreds queued around city blocks in Sydney and Tokyo to get their hands on the iPhone 4S, ahead of store sales in Germany, France, Britain and North America.

"I am a fan, a big fan. I want something to remember Steve Jobs by," said Haruko Shiraishi, waiting patiently with her Yorkshire terrier Miu Miu at the end of an eight block queue in Tokyo's smart Ginza shopping district.

The new model looks similar to the previous iPhone 4 but has an upgraded camera, faster processor and highly regarded voice-activated software, which allows users to ask questions.

Australian Tom Mosca, the first to buy the phone in Sydney, said he would ask his new white iPhone: "Where's Steve?" Many Apple fans believe the phone was called iPhone 4S to mean "for Steve".

Apple CEO Tim Cook and his executive team hope the first device sold without their visionary leader at the helm will protect them against a growing challenge from the likes of Samsung Electronics .

The South Korean firm, Apple's arch-rival with smartphones powered by Google's Android software, expects to overtake it as the world's biggest smartphone vendor in terms of units sold in the third quarter.

The iPhone 4S -- introduced just a day before Jobs died -- was dubbed a disappointment because it fell short of being a revolution in design, but glowing reviews centred around its "Siri" voice-activated software have helped it set a record pace in initial, online sales orders.

In Tokyo, 24-year-old Ryosuke Ishinabe said: "I just wanted the newest iPhone. I want to try out iCloud."

Despite the enthusiasm at Apple stores, the launch was marred somewhat by widespread complaints this week on the Internet about problems downloading iOS 5 -- the latest version of Apple's mobile software.

There were also problems with iCloud, Apple's online communications, media storage and backup service formally launched on Wednesday, with users reporting glitches such as losing their email access.

Those concerns pale compared to the problems for rival Research in Motion , which has been grappling with an international outage of its Blackberry email and messaging services for several days.

JOBS SHADOW OVER iPHONE LAUNCH

The vast majority of the iPhone 4S buyers at the Sydney store appeared to be existing Apple customers, many having bought the original iPhone and its subsequent upgrades. Only one out of 10 people surveyed by Reuters was a new Apple customer.

"I have been waiting for the iPhone 5 for a long time. But since Jobs died, I wanted to make sure I had a new iPhone with some advantages over the old," said iPhone devotee Mark Du, concerned over future Apple gadgets without Jobs in charge.

Apple fans in Sydney and Tokyo made sure Jobs was part of the iPhone 4S launch, with flower, candle and photo shrines to the late Apple boss erected outside the stores.

Underscoring the enthusiasm for the new phone, Japanese mobile carrier Softbank Corp had to temporarily stop contract applications after its computer system was overwhelmed with more requests than it had expected.

Apple said it did not release sales figures on launch day, so gauging initial sales is difficult. Apple said it had taken more than 1 million online orders in the first 24 hours after its release, exceeding the 600,000 for the iPhone 4, though that model was sold in fewer countries initially.

Some analysts expect fourth-quarter iPhone shipments to reach 30 million or more, almost twice as much as a year ago.

Apple's fifth-generation iPhone uses chips from Qualcomm Inc , Toshiba and a host of smaller semiconductor companies, according to repair firm iFixit, which cracked the device open on Thursday.

APPLE SOFTWARE CRITICISM

Apple's iOS 5 software became available this week and is intended to upgrade older phones and enable new features such as better Twitter integration.

But glitches with the new iCloud service and mobile software sparked a chorus of user complaints.

"This would be a great time for like, Samsung or something, to take out a sponsored ad," user Ryan James Kirk tweeted.

The iPhone -- seen as the gold standard for smartphones -- is Apple's highest-margin product and accounts for 40 percent of its annual revenue.

Analysts point to several factors in Apple's favor: a $199 price that matches up well with rival devices; availability promised on more than 100 carriers by the end of 2011, far more than its predecessors; and glowing reviews.

"I think we want to figure out where he's going to play, and where we're going to live," she gushed. "We haven't even thought of any of that. We're staying in New York right now. I travel a little bit for work... Hopefully the lockout will be done and we'll know where he's playing ... I'd say like a year, give us a year."

Kim additionally said she's willing to move just everywhere for Kris even though it means she has to tone down her glamorous Los Angeles-New York lifestyle. When asked what she would do if her husband plays for the Oklahoma Thunder basketball team, she replied, "I would go to Oklahoma City. We're not going to live a separate life."

Kim has already talked about her desire to have babies just a few weeks after dating Kris. Back in January, the socialite posted a childhood picture of the NJ Nets basketball player on Twitter and accompanied it with the message, "I want my son to look like this."

Mira Sorvino was not wearing her Mighty Aphrodite clothes when she attacked me at the BBC World Debate programme on Human Trafficking. Her dress was a demure tartan instead, though with high transparent platform heels.

The programme has become accessible online in the UK, which it was not originally, so if you couldn’t see it before try again – it may now be watchable wherever you are. I wrote about the background to this show before I was flown to Luxor for it and afterwards when it went online in January.

Editors cut and re-arranged the debate from its original sequence, softening Mira Sorvino’s personal attack on me by placing it quite late, when in reality she freaked out only a few minutes after we began – after I had answered a question only twice, I think. She was backed by an audience composed of non-critical anti-trafficking campaigners brought in by the UN and Mrs Mubarak, now fallen from prestige but acting like a queen at the time (December 2010). women should so overwhelmingly be seen as pushed, obligated, coerced or forced when they leave home for the same reason as men: to get ahead through work.

Sex trafficking and human trafficking were not words on everyone’s lips when I wrote the above ten years ago. I was trying to figure out what was special and problematic about migrants who sell sex, believing that migrants are migrants, no matter what jobs they end up getting (including prostitution or sex work). Nowadays, a lot of the social conflict is about statistics: how many are trafficked, how many are illegal migrants. But even more it is about definitions, world views, ideas about sex and money, the insistence that a particular cultural view should be everyone’s.

Most conversations about migrants who sell sex present black-and-white versions of something that is almost entirely grey. For moral crusaders who would rush to legislation or attempt to prove that one sort of law is better than others, my vision is not satisfying. I say Stop, slow down. Until you comprehend the myriad elements present amongst people who leave home to go to another country and sell sex, you shouldn’t be passing laws about them. Of any kind. This is not useless postmodern dithering but the position that until you understand the minimum about how people experience their own lives you cannot responsibly take actions to help them. If you don’t care what they say themselves then don’t talk about helping and admit that control is what you want: the power to make people stop doing what you don’t approve of and start doing something else, whether they want to or not.

Leaving Home for Sex is the first piece I published that defined what my work would be for the next few years. At the time it was unusual not to use the term prostitute, but I also didn’t just substitute the term sex worker. Instead, I tried to describe how selling sex can be an occupation that works out all right for migrant women without their taking on a definite identity based on it. You will see ‘Challenging place’ in the original title because the piece was written for a special journal issue on women and place – the local and the global. As soon as people migrate, there is a tendency to sentimentalise their home. Warm images are evoked of close families, simple household objects, rituals, songs, foods.[1] Many religious and national holidays, across cultures, reify such concepts

f ‘home’ and ‘family’, usually through images of a folkoric past. In this context, migration is constructed as a last-ditch or desperate move and migrants as deprived of the place they ‘belong to’.Yet for millions of people all over the world, the birth and childhood place is not a feasible or desirable one in which to undertake more adult or ambitious projects, and moving to another place is a conventional—not traumatic—solution.

How does this decision to move take place? Earthquakes, armed conflict, disease, lack of food impel some people in situations that seem to involve little element of choice or any time to ‘process’ options: these people are sometimes called refugees. Single men’s decisions to travel are generally understood to evolve over time, the product of their ‘normal’ masculine ambition to get ahead through work: they are called migrants. Then there is the case of women who attempt to do the same.

Research in a marginal place: Geographies of exclusion

For some time I worked in educación popular in Latin America and the Caribbean and with latino migrants in North America and Europe, in programmes dedicated to literacy, AIDS prevention and health promotion, preparation for migration and concientización (whose exact translation does not exist in English but combines something about consciousness-raising with something about ‘empowerment’). My concern about the vast difference between what first-world social agents (governmental, NGO workers, activists) say about women migrants and what women migrants say about themselves led me to study and testify on these questions. I have deliberately located myself on the border of both groups: the migrants and the social, in Europe, where the only jobs generally available to migrant women are in the domestic, ‘caring’ and sex industries. My work examines both the social and the migrants, so I spend time in brothels, bars, houses, offices, ‘outreach’ vehicles and ‘the street’, in its many versions. Data on what migrant women say come from my own research and others’ in many countries of the European Union; women have also been interviewed before or after migrating in Latin America, Eastern Europe, Asia and Africa. Data on what social agents say come from my own research with those who work on prostitution issues in those countries, including as evaluator of projects for the International Labour Office and the European Commission.

Although researchers and NGO personnel have been working with migrant prostitutes for nearly twenty years in Europe, publication of their findings remains outside mainstream press and journals. Most of the people who have met and talked with many migrant prostitutes are neither academics nor writers. ‘Outreach’ is conceptualised as distinct from ‘research’ and generally funded as HIV/AIDS prevention. This means that the published products of outreach research are generally limited to information on sexual health and practices; the other many kinds of information collected remain unpublished. Some of those who work in these projects have the chance to meet and exchange such information, but most do not. Recently, a new kind of researcher has entered the field, usually young academic women studying sociology or anthropology and working on migrations. These researchers want to do justice to the reality around them, which they recognise as consisting of as many migrant prostitutes as migrant domestic/‘caring’ workers. Most of these researchers do oral histories and some have begun to publish but it will be some time before such findings are recognised. Stigma works in all kinds of ways, among them the silencing of results that do not fit hegemonic discourses.[2] The mainstream complaint says ‘the data is not systematised’ or ‘there is no data.’ In my research, I seek out such ‘marginalised’ results.

The Singapore MRT’s Circle Line new extension will open tomorrow, October 8. The new stations extend the line from Marymount to Harbourfront where you can interchange with the North-East Line. There’s another new interchange at Buona Vista with the East-West Line.

An update for our Explore Singapore MRT map is now available on the iTunes App Store. It’s a free update for all users who have purchased the app in the past! Our online map www.exploresg.com has also been updated with the new stations.

Note this is a beta release - we don’t yet have some information for the new stations, such as first/last train times and journey costs. We’ll provide a new update as soon as we get this information added.

SINGAPORE: Singapore's Circle Line rail network got off to a start on the first day of full operations, with the remaining 12 train stations from HarbourFront to Caldecott opening on Saturday morning.

It's also the first day of higher fares for bus and train rides, with adults who use the EZ-link card paying about two cents more per ride.

But that didn't stop self-professed trainspotter Jay Tan from hopping on.

The 23-year-old waiter took one of the first trains out, just after 5.30am.

He said: "Well I'm on one of the first trains out and it's been a smooth journey so far. Very few people on board. I suspect because most would prefer sleeping in on a Saturday morning. But not reporters like me, my hardworking camera crew and of course, a few train enthusiasts.

"I'm too excited, I (couldn't) sleep last night ... I wanted to board the first train. I also like to board the bus, take a bus photo at the bus stop outside the bus interchange doing bus spotting or trainspotting, sometimes. Like either the new train or new bus, I really like it very much."

There is no immediate respite for the troubled actor Lindsay Lohan, who recently made it to the headlines for being kicked out of designer Marc Jacob’s party and then, spotted kissing Indian origin hotelier Vikram Chatwal at his apartment. However, the actor seems to have run out of luck and is again being talked about for wrong reasons. She is being accused of confronting Chatwal’s estranged wife Priya Sachdev at his hotel, Dream Downtown, saying with obvious scorn, “You are his wife?”.

According to New York Post, a source said, “Lindsay had been staying at Vikram’s house and even installed her hairdresser in the baby’s room, but was told to leave before his wife arrived from India with the child a few days ago. His father Sant Singh has tried to order Lindsay out numerous times”.

“Lindsay found out Vikram was hosting a dinner at the Dream, and turned up with a friend at the hotel’s Electric Room, waiting for him,” the source said.

“Priya was very dignified, but Lindsay was so rude. She acted as if she’d had no idea Vikram was married, and tried to make it clear that Vikram was her friend. Others had to step in to calm things down,” the source added.

Chatwal married model Priya Sachdev in 2006, but are now separated, but have remained close for their daughter.

The GOP12 candidates on Monday rushed to condemn President Obama’s plan to pay for his jobs bill by raising taxes on the wealthy and corporations, predicting the plan would fail to create jobs.

Rick Perry called Obama’s plan a “bait and switch that offers more than a trillion dollars in higher taxes for a promise of temporary tax relief.”

“The president penalizes investment when it is needed most, discourages charitable giving and doubles down on a failed government stimulus strategy,” Perry said.



Mitt Romney predicted it “will have a crushing impact on economic growth.”

Obama’s speech on Monday morning clarified a tax plan that would pay for his $447 billion jobs bill. Obama’s proposed $3 trillion deficit-cutting plan includes $1.5 trillion in tax hikes on the wealthy that incorporates the “Buffett rule” to ensure that millionaires pay more taxes proportionate to their incomes, and eliminated Bush-era tax rates on households with an annual income above $250,000.


"Higher taxes mean fewer jobs – it’s that simple," Romney said.
Michele Bachmann called Obama's plan a "gimmick" and slammed billionaire investor Warren Buffett, the inspiration for the "Buffett rule,"

who asked the administration to raise taxes on the "super-rich" class.

"If Warren Buffett believes he doesn't pay enough taxes, then he should write a check today to the Treasury, but he and the president shouldn't enact warfare on the millions of small businesses, on charities and on middle class America with increased tax burdens," she said in a statement released through her presidential campaign.

Jon Huntsman called the plan “deeply misguided” and blasted Obama for “peddling a version of the Buffett Tax Hike” throughout his presidency.

“That simply hasn't worked and it won't work now,” he said in a statement.

Herman Cain, another presidential hopeful, also released a statement rejecting Obama’s denial that his plan is “class warfare,” a phrase that House Republican leaders such as Budget Committee Chairman Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) have used to describe it.

“President Obama's once said, ‘You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig.’ I agree,” Cain said. “It doesn't matter that he calls it ‘paying your fair share.’ It's still class warfare.”

Ron Paul also doubled down on Obama's "class-baiting rhetoric" and predicted the plan would deal a "fatal broadside" to the American economy.
